How We Save Space in Our Guest Room: A Convertible Couch Bed

We have a four bedroom ranch, which is somehow still too small for our little family. Our extra bedroom is used as a combination office, craft room and guest room when folks stay overnight. We wanted the room to be usable for our everyday needs, but ready to host guests with something more than an inflatable mattress. And we didn’t want to invest in a full pull-out couch.

Enter the convertible couch. (Technically, love seat). We explored a few options, read reviews, watched videos, and landed on this version. In general, we are satisfied and would recommend this as a space-saving option. This is the Jaxx Zipline Convertible Sleeper Loveseat & Ottomans. Here’s a collection of all the configurations between couch and bed, including the foot stools/ottomans and the mattress topper.

Here’s what makes it worth it, and some notes on what’s not so great:

Pros:

Sturdy. Like, almost too sturdy (for sleeping at least, see below). It behaves almost like memory foam, although it’s not as squishy — meaning you can step on one portion and the rest of the piece isn’t affected. The edges don’t collapse when you sit or stand on them. You could sit on one end, and a glass of water would still stand on the other.

Well-Made. The fabric has held up, the zippers are quality, and the internal foam/stuffing hasn’t lost any strength in the couple years we’ve had it. It doesn’t get used daily, but it’s held plenty of guests sleeping and a fair share of two toddler boys running, jumping, and climbing all over it.

Flexibility/Multiple Pieces. We leave the main couch base in our guest room, and have the two foot stool pieces in our living room for our little boys to play on. There are multiple configurations you could use depending on your space and needs. It’s a perfect little jungle gym for our kiddos when we let them roam on the whole thing.

Low-Risk Covers. The fabric covering each piece is removable (in fact, you have to put it on yourself after it arrives). We love this and consider it essential accident-protection insurance. Rips, spills, or any other damage will only affect one piece of the unit, and the cover can be easily removed to be mended or cleaned.

Cons:

Comfort. This isn’t the most comfy sleeping surface. When we use it as a bed, we add a memory foam mattress topper. We have to keep the topper rolled up in a trash bag in the guest room closet. It’s not a glamorous solution, but the comfort level is a necessary addition.

Couch height. If you’re looking for a regular couch for adults to use daily, this probably is not for you. It’s a low surface to sit on, that may give some folks with mobility issues some trouble sitting down and getting up. It’s a perfect spot for an infrequently used sitting space, a kids room or play room. Or, like us, for piling on a bunch of random craft projects and extra papers until we have a guest come to stay. For height reference, note the above photo with kids seated on the couch.

We bought ours on Amazon and it was packaged and shipped well. They also have a website to read more about the company (made in the USA!).
