The Berry Best: April

Here are our favorite links from the past month — what gave us pause, made us smile, or inspired us in some way. Note we aren’t covering current events. In fact, some links may be to articles published a while ago. They’re new to us, and now they’re new to you! Enjoy!

“Why We Need ‘Science Citizens'” (Scientific American).

Enthusiastic applause. “Science citizens would be better prepared to research subjects independently and develop better informed and more nuanced opinions about a range of matters, from public policy to personal health, regardless of how such topics are portrayed in quick media hits.”

“If we can’t remember our earliest memories, do they matter?” (Whyy, PBS)

Fascinating piece, especially for a parent of young children. This prompts me to do more free writing about my kids — their quirks, their funny sayings, their day-to-day lives, so I can help preserve some of what they naturally lose.

An Unlikely Superpower (NPR)

Spoiler: She can *SMELL* diseases.

COVID-19: Lighter Fare

This Is Not the End of the World and You Are Not a Prepper (New York Times, Opinion)

“Those of us who are bugging in, who are keeping a wary distance from each other, are doing so not because we see other people as a threat to be avoided, but because we understand that our fates are inseparable from those of other people.”

4 Tips for Spotting a Fake News Story (Harvard)

Just in case you are staring down an entire Facebook feed of dubious “tips” regarding COVID-19, arm yourself with a basic screening checklist to sort out what is accurate information.

Reminders

  • It’s spring clean-up time! Make a plan with the help of folks who know what they’re doing.
  • Establish a way to get severe weather alerts, especially if you’re asleep. I like the Red Cross Emergency App, which has a feature to detect your location even when you’re away from home. Identify your family’s safe spot if severe weather hits, and make sure everyone knows the plan.
